"For us" can mean helping us build up our relationship with God, and feel closer to Him. That alone is an improvement over anything else. But I remember once hearing a shiur on what purpose davening serves. Rav Kook zt"l was of the opinion that prayers were not for Hashem as Hashem does not change his mind but for us. (I have found it in a sefer of Rav Kook's that my brother gave me.) I believe some Rishonim were of this view also. This is a great post.
