Mugging followup and protest open forum

This is an email that is going around:

THREE ATTACKS within 24 HOURS!!!!!!!!

1. First night of Pesach — Dorset Place — Orthodox man attacked in front of son with a large stick on his own block.

2. First Day of Pesach — broad daylight — Labyrinth Road. Orthodox man attacked in front of his pregnant wife. Rendered unconscious at the scene and lost teeth from the severe beating to his head. Had to be rushed to the hospital via ambulance.

3. First Day of Pesach — not long after the Labyrinth Road attack – Labyrinth and Gist Avenue — Another Orthodox man was attacked in front of his wife and 8 and 6 year old daughters. His injuries resulted in 4 hours of surgery to have THREE plates put in his face to fix fractures to his eye and sinus area. His wife and young daughters are traumatized.

This is not to be taken lightly or to be treated as merely Juveniles. These individuals were targeted because they were Orthodox Jews. These attacks are so brazen — occurring during daylight hours in front of witnesses. Even when the third victim ran – he was chased and beaten more. The vicious attackers used a ruse — In the third case, the attackers approached the victim and said, “Do you have the time, Sir.” They then attacked before waiting for a response. The damage done indicates the use of a rock or hard weapon of some sort.

SHOMRIM has responded en masse to these crimes and was able to locate one of the attackers at a home near Clarinth Road. The police had one juvenile attacker in custody but he has BEEN RELEASED to commit more crimes.

Sheila Dixon will be at the meeting Tuesday night to talk about improving our neighborhood – including paving Cross Country Boulevard. We are here tonight to show that BEFORE PAVING OUR STREETS, CLEAN THEM UP FIRST!

WE NEED COMMUNITY SUPPORT TO SHOW THE MAYOR THAT WE ARE CONCERNED AND WANT RESULTS!!!! PROSECUTE THE INDIVIDUALS RESPONSIBLE!!!!

EVERYONE IS URGED TO COME TO THE MEETING ON TUESDAY NIGHT TO SHOW SUPPORT

— THE MORE PEOPLE, THE MORE IMPACT WE HAVE —

SHEILA DIXON, MAYOR WILL BE AT THE GLEN NEIGHBORHOOD COMMUNITY MEETING ON

TUESDAY NIGHT, APRIL 17TH AT 7 P.M. – 8:30 P.M. AT THE PARK HEIGHTS JCC,

Update at 6:03pm on 4/16/07:

The following email was also sent out via Shomrei’s e-mail list:

You are urged to attend the Glen Neighborhood Community Meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, April 17, from 7:00-8:30 pm at the JCC Park Heights. Foremost on the agenda is recent attacks on members of our community, who appear to have been targeted because they are Orthodox. Mayor Sheila Dixon is expected to attend.

MESSAGE FROM KEN GELULA OF CHAI:

CHAI, Shomrim, the NWCP and neighborhood association leadership have been working very closely with the Police Department, the Mayor’s office and the immediate neighbors since these assaults occurred to find the perpetrators and to do everything possible to make sure that there are no repetitions. The Mayor was outraged when she heard about these assaults (particularly because of the timing at the beginning of Pesach) and immediately demanded that everything possible be done by the police and other agencies to arrest the perpetrators and to strengthen security in the vicinity. Most of the people who live in that immediate area are well aware of the efforts that have been made.

The message [being circulated] unfortunately belies the 100% effort that is being made by the community and the City. In fact I cannot think of another incident when there was greater cooperation and combined effort than has been made in this case. What is greatly needed by neighborhood leadership right now is a strong message of support and appreciation for the efforts made in the immediate aftermath of the incident and continue to be made by the police, the Patrol, Shomrim and CHAI. We need to have great and cooperative relations with the Police Department and all of our elected officials. I’m concerned that the message below actually hurts our efforts because they may think that the Jewish community is not appreciative of all that has been done and is being done. We all share the feelings of outrage about theses episodes, but in our opinion this is not the time for protest, but for appreciation and encouragement.

During Chol HaMoed Pesach, immediately after the attacks, a meeting of the Fallstaff Improvement Association, where the incidents occurred, was attended by over 50 residents and officials from the Mayor’s office, the police, NWCP, Shomrim and CHAI. Because the meeting tomorrow evening is a local Glen Neighborhood Improvement Association meeting and not a community wide forum, we hope that common sense will prevail.

It would be helpful if you would forward this message to whomever sent you the message and to whomever you sent it. Anyone is free to message me or call me at 410-466-1990, ext 215.

Sincerely,
Ken Gelula

  1. Greg Says:

I think we all need to work very hard to not make this into a race-related incident.

  2. Greg Says:

Also, why don’t I ever get any of these emails? It’s as if people are afraid I’m going to publicize these things in some fashion? 😉

  3. aishel Says:

    You? Publicize something? Never!

But seriously, didn’t you get the Shomrei e-mail?

  4. Gishmak Says:

    scary stuff!
(I have a friend on Labyrinth)
Hope your neighborhood has no more of such incidents!

  5. Sara K Says:

My borother lives in Labyrinth and the neighborhood residents were very shaken up over Yom Tov.

  6. Sara K Says:

I meant brother…sorry for the typo

  7. Bubbyt Says:

The email specifically said not to make this into a protest meeting. Greg…Shomrei sent out an email titled “meeting”. Also, sign up for “Baltimore achdus”. Then you’ll get all the mail that is fit to print.

  8. aishel Says:

BubbyT, that’s why I made sure to add the update from the Shomrei email.

  9. LN Says:

NWCP also sent out that email.

  10. anon Says:

    Greg,
Why isn’t this a race related incident? or would you prefer that it be labeled as an antisemitic incident?
These thugs looked and picked on specific people from a specific race/religion.
    That is racism/antisemitism.

  11. JDMDad Says:

Is there a website out there that tells how to get on the e-mail lists? My family will be moving to the Baltimore area sometime in the next few years, and I’m trying to get a feel for the area (in terms of safety, which part we should be moving to, etc.) Or is it current residents only?

  12. aishel Says:

JDMDad, there isn’t really. The letter I got from Shomrei was just b/c I belong to their general email list, which is usually about shul stuff. You can, however, subscribe to the NWCP list: http://nwcp.info/email.htm
